That’s a question that has always fascinated me, basically because I know that the Nile, the Amazon and the Thames – as majestic and life-giving as they and many of the world’s other great rivers become – all begin as mere trickles. Making a Mountain Haven
I see gardens as entire worlds unto themselves - as complete and alive and distinct rather than as simple decorative extensions of architecture.  Whatever form they might take, these spaces should carry us back into the peaceful parts of ourselves and to the calm, clear realms of our minds and spirits.   This outlook has, in my role as founder and principal of Marpa Design Studio of Boulder, Colo., led me to consider landscapes as integrated wholes rather than as cobbled assemblies of solutions to various problems.  It's a positive philosophy and design approach that is fully on display in the project depicted on these pages. I was recommended by the architect, who was working with the owners of this sprawling Rocky Mountain estate on a major renovation of both the home and the surrounding land.  From the start, I was told there was just one major theme in mind:  The home and its surroundings were to look as natural as possible - as though everything had arisen organically from the roots of the mountains.   Neither house nor grounds possessed that spirit at the time, and the landscape was particularly deficient.  Indeed, the only pre-existing feature was a cracked
Southern Accents
Specializing in naturalistic watershapes obviously requires an appreciation of nature, says Atlanta-based pond/stream specialist Robert Vaughn, but doing a good job of emulating what happens in and around natural bodies of water also calls for a refined set of design and installation skills – especially when the goal is to create watershapes that appear right at home amid rolling topographies and densely wooded landscapes. The Atlanta area is a great place to be a watershaper these days.  The natural landscape is beautiful with its undulating terrain and dense tree canopy, and there are plenty of affluent, upscale neighborhoods in which skills may be applied in support of clients who have the wherewithal to demand something special.    That combination of attributes adds up to great opportunities for companies like mine – Earthwerx of Carterville, Ga. – that focus on crafting nature-inspired paradises in substantial backyards.  Indeed, this is a market in which prospective clients are passionate about enjoying their homes and their surroundings instead of engaging in the hassles and perceived risks of travel. Natural Transference
Every year, it seems, I'm asked to teach more and more classes on how to build streams, waterfalls and ponds that look natural. I enjoy conducting these sessions for local supply houses, landscape architecture firms, community colleges and other organizations and find it flattering that they value what I know.  My motivation for sharing, however, is less about ego gratification than it is about my awareness that there's no way a single company can build all of the naturalistic watershapes consumers want these days. To me, it's a matter of collective as well as personal interest that these watershapes be built to function well and look great.  In Colorado in particular, I also see a need for work that appears completely and distinctly natural, simply because most clients here are accustomed to seeing remarkable beauty in the countless alpine settings that grace this beautiful state. Graceful Cascades
It certainly doesn't happen very often, but sometimes the addition of a watershape can completely redefine the way a property is perceived.   In the case seen here, a nine-acre estate in the mountains above of Malibu, Calif., was zoned for agriculture.  The owner's intention in buying it was quite appropriate:  He wanted to turn it into a working vineyard brought to life visually by a big stream, pond and waterfall system. Once the watershape took form, however, the owner was so inspired by what he saw that his vision for the property changed and he recast the place as a venue for weddings and other events that would be enhanced by the bucolic, utterly romantic surroundings.  In a very direct way, in other words, the watershapes served to increase both the aesthetic and financial value of the property. I'm a romantic at heart, so the notion that the work on display here will be a backdrop for special, memorable occasions has made the big, complicated project even more
Sculpting Edges
When we think about the challenge of literally "shaping" a body of water, we must start by thinking about edges.   The edge is the pond's DNA or blueprint.  It tells us almost everything about the pond.  Without being able to observe the edge, you can't discern whether it's a formal pond, lake or a sewage-treatment facility.  It might be a beautiful water feature or an eyesore.  The edges form our reference in defining the whole setting and are consequently of the utmost importance. We find this defining-edge concept at work in nature's own beaches, riverbanks and lakeshores, and it is a one that extends right through the heart of watergardening and all types of watershaping, whether architectural or naturalistic (or, as I commonly classify them, formal or informal).  No matter the focus or intent of our designs, we must always consider what will be happening at the water's edge.  This is the part that demands the most thought, skill, care and expenditure. The subject of edges is so massive that it will be considered here and in articles to come.  For purposes of this discussion, we'll limit our look to the use of edges in informal pond settings and situations in which we are attempting to create the impression that the body of water in question was originally
The Graceful Dance
Successful residential exterior design is akin to a precisely choreographed dance.  One sequence of steps defines the relationships among hardscape, water and plants.  Other sequences distinguish light and shadow, color and texture, open views and intimate spaces.  If the choreographer has done a good job, we don't see the individual steps so much as we enjoy the overall experience of motion.   The key to making these multifarious steps work together?  It's all about balance. Natural Patterns
So often, design comes down to an ability to see patterns. I first learned this from my mother, a dressmaker who had an uncanny ability to look at garments for which there were no sewing patterns and then sit down and make them from scratch.  I seem to have inherited this talent, taking in a barren landscape and quickly visualizing how it will look with plants, rocks and water.  For this, I am happily in her debt. Guided by Style
The famous landscape architect Thomas Church was known to proclaim, "I have no style."  What he meant was, rather than impose a style that was characteristically his on a project, he preferred to let the home, site and clients guide the stylistic details of his work. I've always admired Church and other designers who are willing and able to move comfortably across the style spectrum in accordance with the situation.  This is certainly how I've chosen to approach my own design work, even when I find the huge range of possibilities a bit perplexing.
