Integrated Style
As the first columnist among several who will be writing in this space, I've been elected to explain what this "Material World" thing is all about.  I agree with the editors that it does require some explaining - but not much.   The thought is that we in the landshaping business, designers and installer alike, seldom use a single material all on its own.  Even a huge, monolithic concrete deck outside a grand office building will have ribbons of stone or brick to break up the monotony. The aim of this and subsequent articles - whoever writes them - is to discuss the process we go through in selecting plant and/or hardscape material combinations that ultimately work together to become beautiful and seemingly effortless explorations of style, texture and color.  In other words, we'll be looking at projects for which all the
Continental Class
When we first began collaborating on projects with top-flight architects, landscape architects and landscape designers several years ago, for the most part our role in terms of design was fairly limited:  We'd receive requests for bids and proposals based on plans of varying detail, and our role was that of faithful installers of the design.  On occasions, of course, we'd also refer our own prospective clients to those same designers, who would generate plans that we would in turn estimate and very often install. We still work that way, but as we've built our ties to these accomplished artists, we've become aware that our role in their projects has been growing, even to the point where we are now being asked in many situations to offer our own design ideas.  We're also seeing that, when on-site decisions must be made, these designers are
Serious Whimsy
This project was all about fun and finding ways to infuse watershapes and the overall landscape with childlike senses of playfulness and wonder.   At a glance, of course, it's obvious that this particular approach wouldn't work for too many clients, but in this case, we were working with a woman who wanted her yard to express her love of color, her sense of humor and her unparalleled inclination toward the unusual. From our first meeting, I knew that this was someone who wouldn't settle for anything that even approached the ordinary.  Maybe it was the 12-foot-tall fiberglass chicken she'd placed in her front yard or the life-size hippopotamus in the backyard or her wildly eclectic taste in art and interior furnishings or her fittingly off-beat
Flames On
As part of my work on movies and television shows through the past dozen years, I've developed a range of special effects that focus specifically on fire.  For the science fiction hit Men In Black, for example, I was charged with devising the flame-spewing weapons wielded by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in a spectacular scene in which they shoot down a flying saucer.   That system involved a range of safety issues along with devising a specially formulated fuel (alcohol mixed with various metals) to create blue flames as well as a combination of inert gases and electronic control systems that were used to extinguish the fire and protect the actors.  As is the way with so much in Hollywood, an on-screen sequence that lasts just a couple of seconds took my team

One of the things I've referred to repeatedly through the years is my interest in quality forming for watershapes.   I look at it this way:  If the job is about creating quality reinforced-concrete structures, then precisely controlling their dimensions and contours stands at the very heart of the art and craft of watershaping.  And all I'm recommending here is simply following the lead of the experts who install building foundations and structural walls by using completely rigid materials and support frameworks.   To drive that point home, I want to discuss the forming of one specific detail - and define a right way of getting it done. In a real sense, I want to build antiques:  My goal in designing and shaping water walls has always been to develop systems of beauty that will be around and appreciated decades or even centuries from now.  Not only are they built to the highest standards of quality - as are many antiques - but they're also meant to hold running water year after year. I don't know who created the first water wall, but my best guess is that they've been produced in one form or another since the late 1960s or early '70s.  I became aware of them in the early '80s, at which point a number of craftspeople were making them from stone, copper, and bronze. Some of these products aspired to be works of sculptural art, but for the most part I thought that the medium's artistic potential hadn't been fully explored or expressed.  My idea at the time was to expand the concept with respect to shapes, sizes, materials and styles.  I also wanted to check into the possibilities of combining

My relationship with bridges in general (and with wooden bridges in particular) began during my childhood near Nebraska's Niobrara River.  The big, load-bearing structures crafted to span that river in the late-19th and early-20th centuries absolutely fascinated me. I'd spend hours climbing on those old structures and was amazed by the way they creaked as their tension and compression members supported truly formidable weights.  At the same time, I came to value the presence of
