Sailing Grace
Challenged to develop a sculpture that would make a strong statement about the commissioning company’s expertise in engineering and motion-control technology, Michael Batchelor and Andrey Bererzowsky of Montreal’s SWON Design delivered a work of subtle beauty to an otherwise stark architectural context.  Here’s a close look at the resulting medley of textured glass, sheeting water, gleaming steel and arcing jets, all set within curving ponds.     With residential projects, the importance of understanding the character and focus of the client is widely recognized and appreciated.  Although the scales are different and the “clients” may be committees, we’ve discovered that the same is basically true with commercial projects as well.   A case in point is this project, which we completed for Parker Hannifin, the Mayfield, Ohio-based manufacturer of engineering components and a multi-billion-dollar company whose products are found on everything from Space Shuttles to precision industrial machinery.  Appropriately, the sculpture we were asked to design was to reflect a highly refined, disciplined sense of beauty. Elegant Intentions
Sometimes, the main idea that will drive a design jumps to mind as soon as you see the site. That was the case with the project covered here:  When I pulled up to the gate of the property - high in the affluent hills of Bel Air, Calif. - what I found wasn't a big, showy home of the sort that have increasingly come to characterize the neighborhood; instead, what I saw was a place defined by subtlety and elegance.   It all started with the gate's beautiful brick pilaster, beyond which I could just glimpse a large, lovely home with the distinctive architecture of an English manor house.  Even though I hadn't met the clients yet or seen the entire job site, I was already convinced that the project would be

As a rule, those of us who build watershapes meant for purposes other than swimming or hydrotherapy tend to pursue one path or another:  Either we make our ponds, streams and waterfalls look as natural as we can manage, or we establish them to reveal the hand of man either partly or completely.  In that either/or context, successful design depends at least in part on being perfectly clear with ourselves about what we are trying to achieve. In assessing ponds of these opposing forms, it's my personal practice to look at both natural ponds and formal ponds (or, more accurately, architectural ponds) as being right on par with one another with respect to their potential for beauty.  Indeed, architectural ponds can be incredibly appealing when done up in such a way that

In pre-Colonial days, the neck of the woods now known as Longwood Gardens was a hunting ground for the Lenni Lenape tribe, who prized the area for the richness of its game and timber. Once the British arrived, the land moved under the control of William Penn, founder (and namesake) of Pennsylvania, who sold it to a Quaker family by the name of Pierce in the year 1700.  The family farmed the property until 1798, when Joshua and Samuel Pierce began planting an arboretum and the space that would one day become Longwood Gardens was born. Those of us living in the Philadelphia area have long enjoyed the privilege of having this resource in nearby Kennett Square, Pa.  It's an amazing place, and I find my way there often because it seems that each time I go, there's something
