Voices of Vision
It’s hard to say goodbye. That’s been especially true this past year as the watershaping world bid final farewells to a remarkable group of industry leaders whose influence will no doubt live on. Their WaterShapes contributions featured here, we honor their lives and contributions with our hearts and sights set on tomorrow.
As we celebrate the New Year, it’s natural to reflect on the people and milestones that have shaped our journey. By honoring those we’ve lost and the values they stood for, perhaps it’s possible to amend the grief with hope for the future.
Leaving an indelible mark on the watershaping industry: designer Kevin Woodhurst, industry leader Vance Gillette, marine biologist and author Wallace J. Nichols, and also pool builder Grant Smith, who passed away in 2021 (included here as an example of ongoing influence and recognition).
Vance Gillette
Few in the pool and spa industry possessed the inspirational mojo of Vance Gillette. Known for his unrelenting pursuit of collective industry excellence and positive promotion, Vance brought transformative ideas to the forefront, promoting the value of understanding the consumer experience, and his inspiring ideas of business management and leadership. He challenged the status quo, encouraging professionals to think bigger and aim higher. Vance’s passion and uniquely engaging persona helped foster a culture of growth and creativity that continues today.
Wallace J. Nichols
Wallace J. Nichols, author of Blue Mind and a dedicated marine biologist, brought a unique perspective to the world of watershapes. His groundbreaking work explored the neurological and emotional connections humans share with water, underscoring its profound impact on mental and physical health. Through his writings in WaterShapes and in many, many other venues, he reminded us that water is more than an aesthetic element; it is a source of healing and renewal. His research and advocacy challenged the industry to prioritize the environmental and psychological benefits of water.
Kevin Woodhurst
Kevin Woodhurst was an artisan designer who understood the profound impact of water spaces on human connection and well-being. His designs transcended functionality, blending art and nature to create sanctuaries of peace and joy. A U.S. Air Force veteran, and a watershape professional of more than 25 years, Kevin’s contributions to WaterShapes magazine reflected his philosophy that a pool was not just a luxury but a canvas for shared experience, as he also reflected on his own journey of professional and personal growth.
Grant Smith
Finally, we honor the life and legacy of Grant Smith, a remarkable professional who dedicated his life to service of his country, family and industry. As a proud former Marine, Grant exemplified honor, courage, and commitment, carrying these values into every chapter of his life. Beyond his military service, in the watershaping world his craftsmanship and integrity set a standard of excellence. His work was not just about creating pools; it was about building spaces where families and friends could connect, laugh, and create lasting memories.
A founding member of the International Watershape Institute, an instructor for Watershape University, and a published WS author, Grant leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, and an enduring example of living with honor and distinction. Although he passed away in 2021, his legacy lives on through Watershape University’s annual Grant’s Grants award, presented to military veterans working in the watershaping industry.
