An Accelerating Spectacle

dreamstime xs 5076699The last time I visited Dallas on business, I kept a crucial side trip in mind: I just had to see the Fort Worth Water Gardens with my own eyes.

Designed by New York architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee and completed in 1974, the space has been iconic since day one. The way the space lures you in, drawing you past its serene surroundings into its tempestuous heart, is among the most masterful feats of watershape design I have ever witnessed – not a place to be missed if you’re anywhere within reach.

Through the years, the fountains has drawn adverse publicity as a result of the accidental drownings that have occurred in the turbulent lower basin, so approach with caution. But do approach: It’s a wondrous reminder of the power of water to shape the land, cool the air and overwhelm basic worldly cares.
