The Art of Finishing
Despite our fondest desires, it’s quite inevitable that most of the things we humans design and build are impermanent and will change.  That’s particularly true of the greenery we place in and around our gardens and watershapes, simply because plants grow and gradually alter the settings they surround or inhabit. There’s a measure of melancholy in this evolution:  As designers and installers of these spaces, we’re left to recognize that in most cases we will never see them at their best and most beautiful.  Yet that’s as it should be, because any living work of art will continue to develop and improve long after it is technically “completed” by our hands. There’s also great joy in creating naturalistic watershapes and garden spaces, because I see the art of finishing as an exercise in setting the table for the future.  In fact, I see this as being remarkably empowering:  By participating in
House Work
There’s no substitute for working closely with clients.  I typically spend many hours conversing with them, discussing everything from their travels and artistic interests to the specifics of the project at hand.  It’s the only way I know of to ensure that I’m following the best path in developing a design to meet their needs. That approach was taken to something of an extreme in the project pictured here:  Not only did I devise the outdoor spaces, including a large swimming pool and a host of other exterior features, but I also was extensively involved in building the house itself.  It was an exciting process for me, one that yielded positive outcomes and that, to this day, is still one of my favorites. Interestingly, however, my association with these wonderful clients actually began a couple years before this project commenced – an encounter that resulted in no work for me at all and also

Sometimes, the main idea that will drive a design jumps to mind as soon as you see the site. That was the case with the project covered here:  When I pulled up to the gate of the property - high in the affluent hills of Bel Air, Calif. - what I found wasn't a big, showy home of the sort that have increasingly come to characterize the neighborhood; instead, what I saw was a place defined by subtlety and elegance.   It all started with the gate's beautiful brick pilaster, beyond which I could just glimpse a large, lovely home with the distinctive architecture of an English manor house.  Even though I hadn't met the clients yet or seen the entire job site, I was already convinced that the project would be

Beginning a project can be wonderfully exciting, especially when you're working in a beautiful place with a terrific client who wants something truly elegant and special.  In fact, I can honestly say that there's nothing quite like the exhilaration of stepping into a new situation with great potential, defining those possibilities and watching a client's eyes light up with the fire of inspiration. Coordinated Perspective
In a word, the project pictured in these pages is about the power and value of collaboration. I was originally called in to consult on the planting design for a backyard in need of remodeling.  A couple of months into the process, the clients informed me that they hated their existing pool and asked me if I knew of a pool contractor named Randy Beard, who had worked with them previously on another of their residences.  I offered to contact Beard and discuss the project with him:  We had known about each other for years, mostly through WaterShapes columns and articles, but to that point we'd never had the opportunity to work together.  The clients had said they wanted to remove the spa from the pool and perhaps raise it to create a spillway into the pool.  Beard and I quickly came to the same conclusion:  Revamping the pool would neither be cost-effective nor would it achieve the outcome the clients desired.  Pointed discussions and budget reviews led to the determination that the existing pool/spa combination should be abandoned in favor of something that worked better to generate a sense of space, greater functionality and enhanced aesthetic appeal.  Although we didn't set out to tackle the project as a team, Beard and I wound up working hand in glove with a synergy that was valuable to both of us - especially in
